Ganvié, Africa's largest stilt village, raises as much curiosity as questions. How do you get there? How much does it cost? When should you go? Is it really doable in a day from Cotonou?
This guide answers all these questions. It is designed to give you, in a single read, everything you need to organize your visit without stress, without surprises, and with maximum enjoyment.
How to get to Ganvié from Cotonou

Ganvié is about 25 kilometers from Cotonou, but access combines a road journey with a pirogue crossing of Lake Nokoué. The complete trip takes between 1h15 and 1h30, depending on transport choice.
Step 1: reach Abomey-Calavi
From Cotonou, you first need to reach the Abomey-Calavi pier. Three options:
Shared taxi: 3,000 to 5,000 FCFA per person, departing from Dantokpa. 45 minutes to 1 hour. The cheapest, but expect shared space.
Private taxi: 10,000 to 15,000 FCFA per trip. 40 to 50 minutes. Recommended for groups or travelers with luggage.
Zemidjan (moto-taxi): 2,000 to 3,000 FCFA. 35 to 45 minutes. Fast but exposed.
Step 2: cross the lake by pirogue
From the Abomey-Calavi pier, a motorized pirogue takes you to Ganvié in 20 to 25 minutes. Prices are fixed per group, not per person.

What to see in Ganvié
A typical Ganvié visit lasts 3 to 4 hours and includes several must-see stops.
The floating market
Ganvié's economic and visual heart. Hundreds of pirogues loaded with fish, vegetables, and goods converge every morning from 5 AM. Activity peaks between 6 and 8 AM: this is the best time to be there. Women run the stalls, negotiate, laugh, call out to each other — a living, authentic spectacle.
Stilt architecture
Ganvié is home to over 30,000 people in thousands of houses built on rônier palm stilts. The guided tour takes you through main and secondary canals, with stops to observe construction techniques and enter a Tofinu home.
The artisan village
In the outer part of the city, artisans work bamboo, fiber, and clay. Mat weaving, pirogue carving, basket making: the gestures are the same as generations before.
For a complete itinerary overview, see our Ganvié experience page.
Where to eat in Ganvié
The floating restaurant of Ganvié is a stilt terrace where you eat over the water. The menu changes with the day's catch, but you will always find grilled fish (tilapia, capitaine), shrimp, and local sides (attiéké, rice, wagashi).
Expect 5,000 to 7,500 FCFA per meal, drinks extra.
Where to stay in Ganvié
Spending a night on the lake transforms the experience. Two stilt lodges offer rooms:
Chez Roger: 25,000 to 35,000 FCFA per night. Lakeside lodge, solar electricity, breakfast included.
Chez Monique: 35,000 to 50,000 FCFA per night. Central location near the market, family atmosphere, dinner on request.
Nights on the lake let you experience Ganvié without the daytime crowds. The sunset over Lake Nokoué and waking to the sound of pirogues are moments that day-trippers never know.

Visiting Ganvié with children and families
A question that comes up often: is Ganvié suitable for children? The answer is yes, with a few considerations.
Motorized pirogues are equipped with life jackets for children. The wooden walkways between the houses are stable and safe. The floating market is a colorful and stimulating environment for younger visitors — the pyramids of fish, the palm trees, the pirogues passing within arm's reach are sensory discoveries unlike anything at home.
What children typically enjoy most: the pirogue crossing above all, but also the Acadja fishing parks (where children can watch fish swimming through the brushwood structures), the stilt houses where Tofinu families are often happy to show how they live on the water, and the village children playing on the walkways — spontaneous encounters that tend to stay in memory.
For children under 5, a half-day is usually enough. For ages 6 to 12, a full day is possible with a midday break at the floating restaurant. Avoid peak sun hours (11 am to 2 pm) by resting in the shade under the boat canopy or inside one of the houses.
Ganvié for photographers
The stilt village is an extraordinary subject for photography, provided you arrive at the right moment.
Golden hour in the morning (6-8 AM): raking light transforms the reflections on the water and the faces of the fishermen. The floating market at this hour is a festival of color. This is the best window of the day for authentic images.
Sunset: from the terrace of a stilt guesthouse, the sunset over Lake Nokoué is one of the most photographically striking scenes in Benin. The silhouette of the houses against an orange sky stays long in memory.
Fundamental rule: always ask permission before photographing a person. A smile and "May I?" work in the vast majority of cases.

Ganvié with or without a guide
A local guide is not mandatory to visit Ganvié, but it is strongly recommended. For several reasons.
First, the guide knows the maze of canals and takes you to the most interesting places. Second, they introduce you to residents, translate exchanges, open doors that would stay closed without them. Finally, the guide is a Ganvié resident: their perspective on the city is that of an insider, not an outside observer.
Certified Visit Ganvié guides are native Tofinu, trained in visitor接待. They speak French, English, and the local language. Their fee is fixed and transparent.
Practical tips for a successful visit
Start early. The floating market is most active in the morning. Departing Cotonou around 6-7 AM is ideal.
Bring cash. There are no ATMs in Ganvié. Withdraw money in Cotonou before leaving.
Protect yourself from the sun. The lake reflection is intense. Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottle.
Dress lightly. The climate is hot and humid. Choose light, quick-dry clothing.
Respect the residents. Ask before taking photos. The Tofinu are not an attraction: they are people at home.
Book in advance during high season (December-February), especially for accommodation and traditional pirogue.

Is Ganvié really accessible to everyone?
Yes. Ganvié is accessible to travelers of all ages and physical conditions. The pirogue crossing is safe with life jackets provided. Moving around on stilts is done on stable walkways. Children are welcome, and large families can be accommodated.
The only prerequisite: be curious and respectful. Ganvié is not a theme park: it is an inhabited city. Those who come with this understanding leave with far more than photos.
